First Grade

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to identify symmetry by analyzing shapes

  • Students will be able to create a symmetrical painting

    • SL 1 - Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups. 

    • SL 2 - Ask and answer questions about key details in a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media. 

Steps

Day One

  • Explain:

    • Show examples of symmetrical objects

    • Show examples of asymmetrical objects

    • “Why is symmetry important?”

    • “Today we are going to use paint to make a symmetrical design and then next time we are going to add eyes and a mouth to make monsters.”

  • Demonstration:

    • Have students gather around the table and show them how to fold the paper in half, put the paint on it, hold the paper in half again and move the paint around

    • Pass out paper with their names of them

  • Work time

  • Clean up

    • Clean brushes

    • Put paintings on the drying rack

Day Two

  • Explain:

    • Briefly review what symmetry is and what you did last class

  • Demonstration:

    • Show students how you draw and cut out facial features for their creature

  • Work time

  • Clean up

    • Scraps are thrown away

    • Work is collected in a pile

Modifications

  • Different size paper depending on a student's needs

  • Larger brush 

  • A pre-folded piece of paper
